OTR VanBox Camper Van Or This? Custom Crafted Vans Built This $300K Family Camper Van as Its Most Expensive Project Yet

Crafted Vans

Finding a camper van that works perfectly for an entire family takes careful planning. Every detail must improve comfort, storage, and everyday usability. Crafted Vans has mastered that challenge with one of its most impressive builds yet. This premium Mercedes-Benz Sprinter conversion combines luxury, functionality, and off-grid capability in one remarkable package.

Crafted Vans Creates Its Most Advanced Family Camper Van

This impressive project starts with a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500 featuring the long 170-inch wheelbase. The founders of Crafted Vans, Sara and Alex James, designed this luxury camper for a family that wanted premium comfort without sacrificing adventure.

This model marks the company’s 58th custom build. It also represents the most expensive family camper that Crafted Vans has completed, with a conversion cost approaching $300,000, excluding the base vehicle.

Rugged Exterior Designed for Every Adventure

At first glance, this Sprinter already looks ready for remote destinations. Crafted Vans equipped it with Reika super single wheels wrapped in Falken Wildpeak all-terrain tires. These upgrades improve traction on gravel, dirt, mud, and rocky terrain.

The suspension also received a major upgrade. The van now rides on a Fox Bypass Performance suspension system that includes:

  • Front and rear Fox shocks
  • Front bypass strut
  • Heavy-duty rear leaf springs

This setup improves handling while supporting the additional weight of the luxury conversion.

To protect the vehicle, Crafted Vans coated the grille, bumpers, and rocker panels with durable truck bed liner. This finish helps resist scratches, flying debris, and corrosion. The roof also features a matching protective coating that blends perfectly with the van’s exterior.

Premium Rear Storage Solutions

The rear of the van offers impressive cargo capacity.

An Aluminess spare tire carrier keeps the spare tire secure without taking interior space. Next to it sits another Aluminess carrier equipped with a powered bike rack lift and a Deluxe storage box.

The powered bike lift makes loading heavy bicycles simple and eliminates unnecessary lifting.

Roof Equipment Expands Adventure Possibilities

A ladder on the driver’s side provides easy access to the Paragon Offroad roof rack.

The roof carries several useful accessories, including:

  • 10-foot Carefree powered awning
  • 95-liter Roam cargo box
  • Recovery boards
  • 50-inch Baja Designs light bar

The biggest highlight is the Super Pacific pop-top roof tent.

Unlike many roof tents, this one allows access directly from inside the van. Three zippered windows provide excellent ventilation, while the weather-resistant construction protects occupants in changing conditions. Instead of traditional black fabric, the customer selected a stylish light brown finish that complements the overall design.

Solar Power Supports Long Off-Grid Trips

The roof tent also supports the van’s off-grid lifestyle.

Crafted Vans installed 420 watts of solar panels along with a roof ventilation fan. When the pop-top closes, the fan fits neatly into the pass-through opening, allowing continuous ventilation even when the roof remains down.

Additional exterior upgrades include:

  • Dual ARB air compressor connections
  • Baja Designs LP6 grille-mounted lights
  • Heavy-duty running boards

Bright Interior Reflects Crafted Vans Design Philosophy

Open the sliding door and the spacious layout immediately stands out.

Unlike many camper vans, Crafted Vans leaves the cab fully open to the living space. This design increases visibility and makes the interior feel significantly larger.

The customer selected a bright interior featuring numerous white oak accents, one of the signature characteristics of Crafted Vans.

The cabin includes:

  • White shiplap walls
  • Blue Lonseal Lonridge flooring
  • Brown leather upholstery
  • White oak cabinetry
  • White oak ceiling slats
  • White oak window trim

The result creates a warm, modern atmosphere that feels more like a luxury apartment than a camper van.

Flexible Seating Improves Everyday Comfort

Sara and Alex replaced the factory seats with premium Scheelmann captain’s chairs finished in brown leather.

Each front seat rotates toward the living area after parking.

Behind them, two additional Scheelmann seats mount securely to floor-mounted L-Tracks. These seats slide into different positions or come out completely when more cargo space becomes necessary.

Each seat also includes:

  • Heated cushions
  • Ventilation
  • Adjustable armrests

A removable Lagun table creates a comfortable dining or workspace.

Above the seating area, overhead cabinets and a storage shelf maximize available space. A telescoping ladder provides access to the pop-top sleeping area.

Crafted Vans Designs a Fully Functional Kitchen

The passenger side houses a beautiful kitchen that balances style and practicality.

Key features include:

  • Deep black stainless steel sink
  • Integrated cutting board
  • Portable induction cooktop
  • Corian countertop
  • Matching backsplash

Storage remains one of the kitchen’s strongest features.

Owners receive:

  • Two overhead cabinets
  • Five drawers
  • Large sink cabinet

This layout easily supports extended family travel.

Luxury Bathroom Adds Residential Comfort

Across from the kitchen sits a complete bathroom.

Crafted Vans installs its proven shower layout together with a Separett urine-diverting toilet.

Large stone-look wall panels create an upscale appearance, while the Nautilus retractable shower door keeps water inside the bathroom during use.

Large Refrigerator Supports Family Travel

Instead of squeezing a small refrigerator into the kitchen, Crafted Vans positioned a large 195-liter Isotherm refrigerator beside the bathroom.

The oversized freezer compartment makes it easy to carry enough food for extended adventures without frequent grocery stops.

Rear Lounge Converts into a Huge Bedroom

The back of the van functions as a spacious family lounge.

A large U-shaped sofa surrounds a swivel dining table, creating an inviting gathering area.

At bedtime, the table lowers into place and an additional support panel fills the center gap. Rearranging the cushions creates an almost king-size sleeping area.

Additional features include:

  • Swivel-mounted television
  • Four overhead cabinets
  • Dometic RTX 2000 roof air conditioner
  • Multiple USB and power outlets

Powerful Off-Grid Electrical System

The utility systems remain hidden beneath the rear seating.

The electrical setup includes:

  • 810Ah lithium battery bank
  • 3,000W inverter/charger
  • Solar charging
  • Shore power charging
  • DC-to-DC alternator charging

This combination gives the family reliable power while camping far from traditional hookups.

Complete Water System Supports Extended Camping

The plumbing system offers everything needed for long off-grid stays.

It includes:

  • 35-gallon freshwater tank
  • 15-gallon shower grey water tank
  • 11-gallon sink grey water tank
  • 2.5-gallon water heater
  • Exterior shower
  • 5-gallon toilet holding tank

These systems allow the family to remain comfortable during extended adventures.

Heating and Entertainment Complete the Luxury Experience

An Espar diesel heater sits beneath the passenger seat, providing dependable warmth during cold weather.

The entertainment system also receives several premium upgrades.

Crafted Vans integrates four speakers throughout the cabin that connect directly to the Sprinter infotainment system. The sound quality greatly improves compared to the factory setup.

The builders also install Canyon Adventure Vans rear door struts, making the rear cargo doors much easier to open while preventing sudden slamming in windy conditions.

Crafted Vans Pricing Reflects Premium Quality

Luxury craftsmanship comes at a premium price.

A standard Crafted Vans conversion starts around $150,000, not including the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis.

Highly customized builds like this flagship family camper can reach nearly $300,000 before adding the cost of the base vehicle.

Crafted Vans once again demonstrates why premium custom camper vans continue to attract serious adventure travelers. Every feature in this Mercedes-Benz Sprinter focuses on family comfort, practical storage, and long-term reliability. From its powerful off-grid electrical system to its luxurious interior and innovative pop-top design, Crafted Vans delivers a camper van that feels ready for years of unforgettable family adventures.
